Veteran Services

Neil Bardal Funeral Centre believes the story of every veteran's life deserves to be shared. We are deeply committed to providing families with exceptional veterans services and can assist you in securing military burial benefits. When it comes time for you to make arrangements for the veteran in your life, know that our staff is both qualified and committed to providing them with the military honours they deserve.

The Veteran

When arranging for veterans' burial services, you can rely on us to assist with completing all the necessary paperwork involved in obtaining the military death and burial benefits including Funeral and Burial Assistance from Veterans Affairs Canada or the Last Post Fund.

Funeral and Burial Assistance

To help ensure that every veteran receives the dignified and honourable funeral and burial service they deserve, financial assistance is available through Veterans Affairs Canada and the Last Post Fund. This non-profit organization ensures that veterans who meet both military and financial requirements will receive funding to help cover their funeral and burial expenses.

To be eligible for financial assistance, the estate of the deceased and surviving spouse must first pass a means test to determine whether or not they have the financial resources to cover the costs. However, if the veteran’s death is related to their military service and a condition for which Veteran’s Affairs provided a disability benefit, assistance may be automatically granted after being determined by A Veteran’s Affairs medical authority. For all other veteran’s, the following criteria is used to determine eligibility for means testing.

  • A former member of the Canadian Armed Forces
  • A Canadian Merchant Navy Veteran of the Second World War or the Korean War
  • An Allied Veteran who served with Allied Forces during the Second World War or Korean War and has also lived in Canada for at least 10 years.

Means Testing

If the veteran is considered eligible for means testing, the following criteria will not be included in the calculation of financial status.

  • Assets to a value of $35,738 if the deceased left a surviving spouse
  • Assets to a value of $700 for each dependent child
  • The family home (including normal household furnishings) and the family automobile Regular income cheques issued to the deceased for the month of death. This includes: Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement, War Veterans Allowance, or disability pension payments.

If the deceased’s estate passes the means testing, funding will be granted to cover all or part of the following services and expenses:
any medical costs of the deceased person's last sickness that were not otherwise paid by the Minister and that are not insured under a private or provincial health care plan;
  • the costs of the following funeral services:
  • preparation of the remains,
  • provision of a casket that meets the standards specified by the Minister or provision of an urn,
  • provision of ceremonial services,
  • provision of death notices,
  • transportation of the remains from the place where the death occurred to a funeral home and to a place of burial or cremation, and
  • transportation of the remains that requires the services of two funeral homes because the funeral home or place of burial or cremation are not in the same locality as the place where the death occurred;
  • if necessary, the cost of any special preparation of the remains for viewing;
  • if required, the cost of providing a single grave and reasonable costs of opening and closing the grave and its perpetual care;
  • if a grave liner is required by the authorities of the cemetery, municipality or province, the cost of a decomposable or non-decomposable grave liner;
  • the cost of cremating the remains; and
  • a military style grave marker (upright or flat granite, or in certain cases, flat bronze) conforming to the standards of Veterans Affairs Canada.
