James Lawrence (“Laurie”) Johnston
Laurie passed away November 30, 2018. Laurie was predeceased by his beloved sister Fay Alward and her husband C.James (Jim) Alward. He will be missed by his nephew Michael Alward and his sons Mark and Chris, and by his niece Margot Alward and spouse Peter Pliszka and their children Alexandra, Theo and Nicholas.
Born in Edmonton, Laurie graduated in 1950 with the gold medal in Pharmacy from the University of Manitoba. He spent 27 years as a community pharmacist in Fort Rouge and Riverview. Laurie was voted Pharmacist of the Year in Manitoba in 1977. He went on to a career as a senior executive in the wholesale pharmaceutical industry in Winnipeg and Toronto.
Laurie’s hobbies were writing and jazz. He combined these interests as a jazz critic for the Winnipeg Free Press in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Laurie took great pride in being able to speak to people in their own language including: French; Mandarin; Cantonese; Tagalog; Japanese; Hindi; Hebrew; Italian; and Spanish.
He was a loyal fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Laurie had a life-long struggle with asthma but maximized his health with twice daily walks around Assiniboine Park.
A funeral service will be held in the Spring.
