Obituary for Steven David Penner

It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that our family must share that on Monday, June 18, 2018 Steven left us while vacationing in Las Vegas to begin his next adventure at the young age of 27.

Steven was the first of our twin boys born 7 weeks prematurely on October 7, 1990, weighing in at only 4 lbs. 7 ozs. Steven's arrival was truly a blessing for his loving parents Jim and Linda, best friend and twin brother Darren and first time grandparents Christine, Arthur, Dora and Dave.
As a younger man he played hockey, baseball, squash and sailed. He loved to see a rod twitch as a fish called for his attention. He was a veracious reader. His favourite hobby was Poker, he loved the game. At the time of his passing he was in Las Vegas for a month to play cards.

Steven's interest in public speaking and debating began at SJR, where he met a wonderful mentor, John Robinson. His passion blossomed when he left Winnipeg to attend the University of Toronto. He joined the debating club at Hart House and the rest is history. While in Toronto, he took his first coaching position with high school students at Upper Canada College where he became a mentor.
Steven most recently took a full time coaching position which he loved every moment of, at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York under the leadership of his friend Eric Barnes. Over the years he won too many awards and championships to list. He was a judge, organizer, board member and chief adjudicator at various regional, national and international championships.
Steven's Facebook page has exploded with kind words from literally all corners of the world. The tributes were both overwhelming and comforting.

While in Vegas we learned that Steven, in his typical selfless way, had registered to be an organ donor. Steven never shared this decision with us but we were not surprised given Steven's genuine caring for others.

Steven was predeceased by his grandfather Arthur Singbeil (2013). Steven is survived and will be forever loved, remembered, and sadly missed by his parents Jim Penner and Linda Singbeil, twin brother Darren Penner, grandparents Dave and Dora Penner, Christine Singbeil and many aunts, uncles, cousins as well as friends, students and colleagues.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 6 PM at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre located at 3030 Notre Dame Ave.

Celebrations to honour Steven will also be hosted this fall in Toronto and Geneva by his devoted debating community.

No flowers please, flowers were not important to Steven. He had a love for dogs and would have appreciated a donation in his name to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Dr Seuss
